Meeting About Moratorium and McMansions is Set for Tuesday at 1pm. See below…

This is an email that many of us received the other day from Columbia’s Zoning Adminstrator… FJ

Subject: Update RE: August 21st Meeting

Good evening . . . it has become apparent that we could not get a committee organized to determine interim measures about subdivisions, demolitions, and McMansions before the September 5th City Council meeting. As such, the meeting on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 1 p.m. in City Council Chambers will be open for any and all persons to express their opinion about interim measures regarding subdivisions, demolitions, and McMansions, or any other related topic, and Mayor Coble will be present. Then, at the regular City Council meeting on September 5, 2007, the City Council will conduct a public hearing and discuss interim measures as well as the formation of a task force to work on permanent solutions to the above issues.

To those persons who responded after the initial announcement about the August 21st meeting, we thank you for your feedback. While we apologize for any inconvenience this shift in process may cause, it is most important that the process provides opportunity for as many people as possible to express their opinions.

With best regards,
Marc S. Mylott, AICP
Director of Development Services / Zoning Administrator

  1. Nice Houses? Minor league baseball? Who needs things like that… what the city needs to do is build two more hockey arenas and invest in another 50M airline…

  2. No way, the last thing our city needs is more Hockey. What we really need in Columbia are more City funded hotels. That beautiful Hilton with it’s $23 million price tag only has to average $200 plus a night for rooms to make ends meet. Of course, I noticed most rooms only go for $160 a night before any group discounts kick-in. Hey, I am looking forward to a couple of years from now when my hard-earned taxed dollars are going to be used to bail it out.

  3. iii –

Th city does not own the Hilton, it is private, owned by Windsor Aughtry Developments. Thank God the pressure on city leaders got them to abandon this stupid idea. Yes, they got some tax incentives, but only a very small portion of city funds.

  4. If you went to the meeting to the meeting today can you please type some minutes(overview) for those of us who could not attend!!

  5. anonymous, iii and iv,

No question. Columbia has been involved in some nightmare projects over the last 5 to 10 years, and avoided others. This may be a good Top 10 list for a post next week. Top 10 Columbia missteps in the last 10 years.

    Hmmmmmmmmmm…

  6. anonymous,

Yes, I went. I may have to get to the synopsis of the meeting tonight. I’m putting some listings on the market at the moment.

Dorsey and another builder got up there and submitted a “plan.” I actually think it is a good compromise until something is worked out permanently. The main cog (to me) in the plan is that owners, etc. are to “Post a Notice” on the property w/ no less than 15 days lead time before a owner/developer/builder, etc. could act.

Some of the plan needs some tweaking, but I think it’s a good start.

Gergel and Boyer both stood and spoke at the end. It was interesting how this exchange played out. I’ll tell more when I get online tonight.
