In case you missed it, some worlds collided recently; The two big dogs of the internet inadvertently caused a straight up food fight regarding how the world stacks a cheeseburger. The Apple and Google visions of a cheeseburger are illustrated in their emojis above, respectively.
What’s the debate, you ask? It’s all about the cheese.
One cartoon replica shows the cheese should be on top of the meat, and one shows that it belongs below.
Thomas Baekdal first started the debate after Tweeting the picture of two burger emojis. “I think we need to have a discussion about how Google’s burger emoji is placing the cheese underneath the burger, while Apple puts it on top,” he wrote.
Baekdal’s tweet has tens of thousands of comments, likes, and re-tweets.
In reply, Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, tweeted “Will drop everything else we are doing and address on Monday 🙂 if folks can agree on the correct way to do this!”
IMHO they both have it wrong. Google has the cheese wrong, while Apple’s lettuce is incorrect. That said, no one seems to care about the lettuce.
We’ll see what happens but I can see both contemplating a change. The global discussion could have Apple bump their lettuce to the top and Google could make everyone happy, or no-one by getting rid of the cheese altogether or putting cheese on the top and bottom.
This is all in good fun but it’s also interesting to see what can become a big deal in today’s world. Looks like the cave folks were on to something by communicating with symbols and pictures. Only difference is we’re looking at pixels on digital walls instead of paint pigments on rock walls.
As we all know emojis are the new hieroglyphics.
